In Group 2019 Workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Reserve Component Members

Details

This technical report summarizes results from an experiment undertaken using the 2019 Workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Reserve Component Members (2019 WEOR) to examine the comparability of two different presentation styles that can be used to administer metrics on a web-based survey. The goal of the experiment was to examine the impact of survey item presentation format on survey results for estimates of past year prevalence rates of racial/ethnic harassment and racial/ethnic discrimination. Specifically, we compared a “single item” presentation of survey items to a more streamlined “grid” presentation of survey items in order to investigate the feasibility and impact of using streamlined metric presentations on future web-based surveys. After comparing results of the 2019 WEOR experiment group to that of the 2015 WEOR, we conclude that grid presentations of metrics can be used reliably and validly in the future to generate estimated past year prevalence rates while also streamlining the presentation of web-based survey items in a way that decreases respondent burden.
