Open-ended questions were included in the 2009 Workplace and Equal Opportunity Survey of Active Duty Members (2009 WEOA), which was conducted February 2 to April 30, 2009. The 2009 WEOA included questions that asked members about racism/extremism, hate crimes and gangs at their installation and in the community surrounding their installation. The response options ranged from “Not at all” to “Very large extent.” Few Service members indicated that racist/extremist organizations (14%), hate crimes (11%), and gang activities (15%) were a problem at their installation/ship. Service members were more likely to indicate that racist/extremist organizations (31%), hate crimes (29%), and gang activities (40%) were a problem in the local community.
