This report summarizes results from additional analyses of the Workplace and Gender Relations Survey of Active Duty Members (WGRA) by sexual orientation. WGRA surveys assess the prevalence of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and related issues within the Active Duty force. Key metrics include prevalence rates of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination; Service members’ experiences with and reporting these types of incidents; and perceptions of unit culture and climate. For the purposes of these analyses, data from 2016 and 2018 WGRA were combined in order to analyze survey results by sexual orientation to gain insights into the experiences of sexual minority Service members. Findings highlight a wide range of negative experiences that sexual minority members are more likely to encounter than heterosexual members, including sexual harassment, gender discrimination, sexual assault, workplace hostility, poorer health, and lower retention intention. Minimal differences emerged when examining the characteristics and reporting patterns for sexual harassment and sexual assault experiences, however. Implications for policy and prevention programming are discussed.
